SKILLS FOR GROWING (Year 0/1 V 6) Age 5 V 10
This programme is made up of 5 units, each focusing on a different
theme and specific skills.
The themes are repeated at each class level, Year 0/1 to Year 6
and the various skills are developed sequentially appropriate to the students ages and class levels.
Unit
1: “BUILDING A SCHOOL
COMMUNITY”
Designed to help children feel safe, comfortable and valued as members of the classroom and the school.
Unit
2: “GROWING AS A GROUP”
Children practice skills that will help them get along with others:
listening, responding, resolving conflicts, and working co-operatively.
Unit
3: “MAKING POSITIVE DECISIONS”
Offers practice in a clearly defined decision-making process, with an emphasis on positive choices and saying “no” to negative influences.
Unit
4: “GROWING UP HEALTHY”
Students learn the importance of caring for their health. They learn about the health hazards of alcohol and other harmful drugs, how social pressures and advertising affect our decisions, the social costs of harmful drug use, and how to say “no” to pressures to use harmful drugs.
Unit
5: “CELEBRATING YOU AND ME”
Increases the children’s respect for themselves and others by acknowledging their individual skills and qualities and the important contributions they make at home, at school and in the community.
As a complement to the unit lessons, a section on
SETTING GOALS FOR SERVICE
provides specific information on implementing projects that serve others in the school community, and in the process enable students to apply their learned skills in a "real" way.

Guide:
One for each class level, packed with information and ideas to make the programme run smoothly. Each guide contains three major introductory sections designed to help teachers implement the programme: Rationale, Implementation and Strategies.
Each of the five major units contains an introductory activity and four to six lessons offering classroom activities for an entire school year.

Unit 4 "Growing Up Healthy" designed for Australian/New Zealand use.
Student/Family Activity Book:
The programme provides a “Together Times” booklet for each unit at each class level. They contain work sheets and activity sheets for students to use in class. Each booklet also introduces parents to the unit theme and suggests activities families can do together to practice the skills taught in that unit.
School
Climate Guide:
The school climate component is vital for reinforcing positive behaviours and skills. This guide helps the School Climate Committee (composed of teachers, support staff, students, parents and community members) to get started, plan and implement school-wide activities related to the programme.
