SKILLS FOR ADOLESCENCE (Year 7 V 9) Age 10 V14
This program helps young people to deal with the challenges of our
changing world, by assisting them to develop the positive social behaviours of
self-discipline, responsibility, good judgement, and the ability to get along
with others.
It also teaches young adolescents specific strategies for saying “no”
to harmful drugs and “yes” to positive, healthy living.
The curriculum is comprised of sequential, skill-building sessions that
are arranged in eight units, each with its own theme.
1.Entering the Teen
Years: The Journey Ahead
Learn the skills needed to create a supportive environment, identify
the changes occurring during adolescence, gain motivation to accept
responsibility for healthy living.
2.Building Self-Confidence
and Communication Skills
Learn to build self-confidence by learning more about oneself and
others. Learn and practice effective listening, responding and validation
skills. Learn how to make positive healthy decisions.
3.Managing Emotions in
Examine the range of emotions and explore appropriate ways of
expressing those emotions and communicating feelings.
4.Improving Peer
Relationships
Learn ways of building healthy relationships, of responding to peer
support and peer pressure, and to communicate effectively and to handle
conflict appropriately.
5.Strengthening Family
Relationships
Learn to understand and appreciate the many aspects and roles within
families and explore communication and problem-solving skills.
6.Making Healthy Choices
Gain knowledge and skills that will help avoid harmful drug-use.
7.Setting Goals for Healthy
Living
Learn how to set goals effectively and how to benefit from the
experience of both success and failure.
8.Service Learning
Applying the learning of the classroom to the real world through
service to others.
